360° panorama with D3 and Nikkor 10.5mm

Werner Weber created a remarkable 360 degree panorama with the D3 and the 10.5 fisheye. The pictures werde made during the “Ramp 2 Ramp | Freestyle Revolution Tour”.

The article includes not only the panorama but also camera settings and a JPG original. Enjoy!

Alex Mustard: the D300 out guns the D2X

Some thoughts by Alex Mustard about the Nikon D3 and the D300 posted here including several test pictures:

“I would also add that I think that the D300 also out guns the D2X. It is a big step on from the D200. DPReview said that the D300 is as much as a step over the D200 as the D200 was over the D100. I am inclined to agree. Although the FX chip D3 is getting all the attention, it was the D300 that really exceeded my expectations.”

and

“From shooting it today I would say that ISO 6400, 3200 and 1600 on the D3 all looked better than ISO 400 on my D2X”

and

“I also tried the new 14-24mm – wow. This lens seemed to show sharper corners – possibly because it has been designed for digital, unlike my old 17-35mm? It is also really, really wide. I was testing this with an architectural photographer who is very sensitive to distortion. His comment was that the 14-24mm had slight barrel distortion compared to the slight pincushion distortion of the 12-24mm and 17-35mm.”

Nikon D3 – white balance and AF performance

Marcel Sauder, a freelancing photograph with plenty of experience, reported about the D3 here and for those of us not able to read German here is my translation:

The D3 outshines  everything I hold in my hands so far (Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Mamiya)!

“I tested the following lenses and each of them is still top with the D3: 85/1.4, 50/1.4, 200/2.0, 70-200/2.8″

Auto white balance is sensational and beats the pants off the D2X. Doing available light the D2X was disapointing but the D3 delivered”

“The new AF is able to detect colours and features a face/eye detection, the cam was able to follow the eyes/the face until you turn away. If you don’t want the feature you can turn it off “

500VR, 600VR: January 2008

Nikon 14-24 sample pictures, taken with a D200

Fredrik A. Rasmussen has done some sample pictures with the new 14-24/2.8…
Nikon 14-24/2.8

not only with the D3 (currently not shown on his site due to restrictions by Nikon) but also with the D200. He states:

“I did test the lens on the D3 and it’s simply amazing, this lens is wide! The lens is virtually free of distortions. On the D200 with the 1.5x crop the lens is 21-36mm, still wide, but compared to the D3 with it’s FX(full frame) sensor it’s just sad.”
