“Heavy metal”: new Nikon 800/5.6
Leon Neam, an English press photographer, has posted the first preview of the upcoming Nikon 800mm/f5.6 lens – his pictures are taken at the 2012 Olympics in London under normal working conditions. Expect updates from him e.g. about weight and handling.
Thom Hogan and the Nikon D800: review and book
The highly valued Thom Hogan has posted his D800 review. I quote from his verdict:
“The D800 and D800E are demanding cameras. If you’re buying them for image quality (and I’m not sure why you’d be buying them otherwise), the possible output can be spectacular, but getting there takes work. I suspect the Big Croppers will poo-poo that. They’ll think that they can just treat the D800 like a point and shoot and then crop to get the picture they want. They’ll be disappointed, as diffraction and sloppy camera handling can make those 12mp crops look worse than if you had just used a 12mp camera with the right lens in the first place”
Read the full review here. I only wish he finally would use a better software for creating his website.
He also starts sellings his “Complete Guide to the Nikon D800 and D800E“. In the past I’ve already bought some of his books, they are so much better than the Nikon manuals and you will learn a lot by reading them.
True mobility: a mobile home for land and sea
Ever thought, a mobile home is quite boring? The new Sealander mobile home features not only a futuristic look but is amphibic. But see yourself:
It even features an electric motor permitting license free access to most inland waters. See a video here: http://vimeo.com/28192670#
New EOS 7D firmware will bring major improvements
In August Canon will make a new firmware available for the EOS 7D that will bring major improvements:
- Customizable auto ISO
- Buffer of 25 raw pictures instead of 15
- In-camera picture rating
- Usage of GPS GP-E2 module
- Control of audio recording level for video
With the exception of the questionable in-camera picture rating (who will use that anyway?) this is an excellent move and hopefully will set a new Standard for camera makers. Three years after the 7D’s launch it’s unusal but highly welcomed that a camera is updated in this way.
